Monisha Mittal, Chief Listener, shares her story of leadership transformation in Feminine Voices: True Stories by Women Transforming Leadership.
"When I began my community development career in North Philadelphia after graduating college, I became very close with my boss who was twenty years older than me. First a mentor, then a friend, we remain close after 25 years. I wondered…why did I resonate so much with his stories of struggle, coming out as a gay man in a large Irish Catholic family? Why did they feel so familiar? I was a heterosexual girl from a traditional Indian family growing up in America. Why did I feel I understood the terror, the not belonging yet wanting to belong?"
"What does this have to do with me now? What does it have to do with feminine leadership? It set up a pattern of hiding and waiting for external acknowledgement before feeling safely ‘wanted’. I didn’t trust myself and hid my true light. I also hid my vulnerability because...I didn't want to be so vulnerable that I needed this love. This completely affected the way I lead."
